Getting in the Christmas spirit in Bedford 2023 is easier than ever with a range of exciting events and activities happening across every weekend of the festive season. Here are some of the best things to do in Bedford this Christmas:
Bedford Town Centre Christmas Light Switch On
On Saturday, 25 November, the Bedford Christmas Light Switch-On Event at Harpur Square will be brimming with live music, dance performances, fantastic food and beverages for all ages, and a unique seasonal market. The grand illumination of Bedford’s new Christmas lights is set for 5pm, but arrive early to immerse yourself in the joyful atmosphere. You can make an afternoon of it from 12noon and enjoy the family festivities. Christmas Crazy Golf takes place on Silver Square for free and have your group or family photo taken in the Christmas Snow Globe. Look out for Santa, the jolly man himself will make an appearance at the Harpur Centre.
Bedford Christmas Market Weekender
A two-day celebration of all things Bedford on Saturday 2 December and Sunday 3 December. This festive extravaganza is brought to you by Love Bedford, the team behind Bedford Flea, Affordable Art and Local Produce Market, and Bedford Borough Council. Festivities will include live music, street food, mulled wine, antiques, vintage, art and crafts, gifting, locally produced food and drink, flowers, wreaths plus the Love Bedford Express Land Train. The hugely popular Bedford Flea, Affordable Art and Local Produce Market will form the base of the market, so you will find Flea, Local Produce, Street Food and live music in Harpur Square. And over on Riverside Square there will be an Affordable Art and Makers tent full of talented local artists, jewellers and ceramicists.
Christmas Tree Festival at St Paul’s Church
Over 5 days in December, the Bedford Christmas Tree Festival welcomes 1000s of visitors to enjoy music and performances by local community groups and schools, and to explore the display of more than 60 Christmas trees decorated by local schools, community groups and businesses; this year’s theme for the decorations is ‘Kings and Queens’. And, as well as the trees and performances, there is a competition for children to find images of famous Kings and Queens hidden in the branches of the Christmas trees, and the chance to vote for your favourite tree. Refreshments and a raffle will also be available. Last year, over £20,000 was raised. All money raised from the Festival goes towards funding much needed equipment for Bedford Hospital and towards the upkeep of St Paul’s Church, a Grade 1 listed building and its continued support to Bedford and the wider community. Entry to the Festival is £3 and free for children under 16.
Santa’s Grotto at the Harpur Centre
Santa’s Grotto is a magical experience for children and adults alike. It’s a great opportunity to meet Santa Claus and his elves, tell him what you want for Christmas, and take a photo with him. The Grotto is located at the Harpur Centre and is open from 10am to 4pm on weekends from 25 November to 24 December. Tickets are priced at £5 per child and include a gift from Santa.
Bedford’s Winter Wonderland
Bedford’s Winter Wonderland at Bedford Park is a magical experience that you wouldn’t want to miss. The event is packed with exciting new features, including ice skating, the Big Wheel, Christmas Tree Maze, and Santa’s Grotto. In addition to these attractions, there is also a festive Alpine Bar where you can enjoy all your favorite beverages and treats.
Whether it’s family fun or a romantic Christmassy day out, there is something for everyone in Bedford this Christmas
