Our History
The Corn Exchange was opened in 1874 and was originally designed to be a concert venue and meeting space, as well as a place of business.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra were housed in the Corn Exchange during World War Two, when it became too dangerous for them to be based in London. The venue played host to many star names during the war, including Glenn Miller, Bing Crosby, Marlene Dietrich and Vera Lynn.

The Harpur Suite was built in 1834 as the town’s Assembly Rooms and originally housed the General Library and Literary and Scientific Institute, before being renamed the Harpur Suite in 1972.

Went to see snow white pantomime, overall performance is what you expect from a pantomime. my issue was we couldn't bring our own food and snacks and I refused to buy overpriced drinks (2 cans of coke £6) when I had cans in my bag. Ruined the experience as the kids would have liked there sweets and drinks they brought with them. So the kids had to endure 2 hours without anything. unfair to the parents after just having Christmas and alot of us have plenty of stuff to use and eat up at home. No different to going to the cinema where we always bring our own bag of goodies.

Watched the Nutcracker. It was an excellent performance. I would highly recommend the tiered seating. If like me, you're short, you would likely struggle to see in the stalls that are level. We didn't have to queue to get in or out. They did allow late comers which causes an unnecessary disruption, hence 4 rather than 5 stars.

We went to see the Crown Ballet performance of The Nutcracker and it was brilliant. The seating was comfortable, the view was perfect (back row of the tiered seating) and the food, drinks, ice cream and snacks were all reasonably priced. The only annoyance was extra fees added to the ticket price - there was a £2.70 commission cost per ticket and then an additional £3.40 booking fee added to the total cost!

We had never visited this venue for a music event and yesterday's night we had tickets for Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah oratorio. I enjoyed the show as the voices and orchestration was excellent, but I have removed a star due to the excessive heat that we experienced. To the point that one of the members of the chorus fainted. I do encourage the managers to assess this issue as we were literally roasting at the balcony seats. Other than that the shortest three hours in my life 😉.
