Description

Fancy Bakery is a small artisan bakery and cafe based in the Black Tom neighbourhood of Bedford specialising in sweet bakes, pastries, savouries & sourdough.

Fancy Bakery was created in 2002 in Saffron‘s home kitchen, after working as a Food Scientist at Unilever for 14 years where she specialised in Bakery & Ice Cream products.

Saffron moved into a small premises in 2004 baking and supplying cafes and restaurants, in and around Bedford. The local neighbours would come to buy cake and chocolate brownies from a small hatch in the window of the shop.

In-House Bakery have been established for 10 years.

Fancy is the premier place to stop for coffee and cake, above all cake and other baked goods. I met a friend there recently and we decided to try something new, cardamom buns. They're like cinnamon buns but with cardamom. Wow! It's not very often I encounter a food with WOW factor but this was one of those rare times. The bun was light and fluffy and it exploded with flavour. Now I'm on my way to eat another cardamom bun.

Food was fine and the cakes are tasty but the service really lets the place down- unfriendly and unwelcoming- the owner does not like babies and definitely not prams! She complained about me using my pram and told me not to change my baby on the bathroom as it’s not baby friendly but offered no other space to change them. Made me feel uncomfortable and sadly won’t be going back or recommending others. Maybe you would have a different experience without a child.

The quality of the cakes is outstanding and recipes very often offer a creative twist on a classic (like the cherry jam Victoria sponge). The carrot cake is wonderful as are the chocolate brownies that come in many varieties. The staff are friendly especially the owner Saffron and the coffee is great.
